The number of children and young people needing mental health care in the UK is increasing year by year, as waiting lists get longer and longer and stigma continues to prevent those in need from receiving professional help. As a recent ‘adult’ at eighteen who has received help from the system in a children’s psychiatric ward after struggling through most of my childhood, I aim to provide small boxes full of advice, quotes, tools and tips from myself and other young people who have or are currently struggling. These boxes would start through School distribution after health and safety clearance, and hopefully move towards a larger target audience in order to reach out to the most vulnerable members of society who deserve to know they are worthy and strong, our young people.

As a student, I am able to create materials for the boxes, such as ‘crisis cards’ with helpful emergency numbers such as ‘child-line’. However, I lack the funding to provide sensory distraction toys and other helpful objects, such as plasters for injuries, stress relief journals, and the very boxes themselves.

How can this have an impact?

The boxes themselves act as a trigger for young people to start thinking for themselves to create a safe environment and support system, whilst still feeling in control of their own health. The impact may start small, but with a little effort I believe it could truly transform young people’s lives (and even if it was just one family who was able to benefit from the materials, isn’t that worth it?).

Stress balls, worry dolls, healing stones and stimming toys such as slime cost up to £15 each for a batch which can create up to 40 boxes.

The boxes themselves are medium sized and cost £2.30 each; boxes this size mean they are large enough for children and young people to use them as their very own place to store mental health essentials.

Supporting this cause would help a great deal to provide the tools for me to create boxes to distribute. It would provide you with the knowledge that despite the growing mental health crisis, you are making a direct impact on a young person taking control and feeling less alone in their illness. Giving a little to this cause could make a huge impact!
